Competition; not built
Authorship: Nuno Graça Moura
Collaboration: Cátia Bernardo, Rita Machado
The challenge is to “create a symbol”, that “through its close rapport with Venice looks as if it had always been there, serene and poised.” (competition rules). The central question of the project and we believe of architecture itself is therefore the relationship between the building and the city. However, building a “bridge” with this program would degenerate in an excessive mass, without a clear reason to be like that. Our project is not a “museum-bridge” as one single building, but a museum and a bridge side by side and connected. This introduces a scale that better fits in this so sensible part of the city. We propose 3 buildings. Two of them have already been drawn by other architects for Venice. We see this competition as a great opportunity to (re)build them, for we believe they fully belong to this city. We would only work as consultants during project and its construction. The other one would be drawn as shown.
These buildings are:
1. Ponte dell’ Academia (by Souto de Moura, competition, 1985) that enframes the entrance to the canal.
2. Teatro del Mondo (by Aldo Rossi): a master piece of the 20th century, that inspires powerful analogies with the surrounding buildings.
3. The new floating Venice Museum: a little ship by the bridge and the square. The public parts of the museum are at the entrance level, (a transparent steel, glass and wood construction), while the others are on a lower level. A small private bridge links the building to Teatro del Mondo, that works either as an exhibition-hall or as a conference-hall.
